چکیده

In this paper, we extend a previous work on a compact scheme for the steady Navier Stokes equations [Li, Tang, and Fornberg (1995), Int. J. Numer. Methods Fluids, 20, 1137 1151] to the unsteady case. By exploiting the coupling relation between the streamfunction and vorticity equations, the Navier Stokes equations are discretized in space within a 3_3 stencil such that a fourth order accuracy is achieved. The time derivatives are discretized in such a way as to maintain the compactness of the stencil. We explore several known time-stepping approaches including second-order BDF method, fourth-order BDF method and the Crank Nicolson method. Numerical solutions are obtained for the driven cavity problem and are compared with solutions available in the literature. For large values of the Reynolds number, it is found that high-order time discretizations outperform the low-order ones.

Essentially Compact Schemes for Unsteady Viscous Incompressible Flows

A new 4th order accurate finite difference scheme for the computation of unsteady viscous incompressible flows is introduced. The scheme is based on the vorticitystream function formulation. It is essentially compact and has the nice features of a compact scheme with regard to the treatment of boundary conditions. It is also very efficient, at every time step or Runge-Kutta stage, only two Pois...

A transient higher order compact scheme for incompressible viscous flows on geometries beyond rectangular

In this paper, we propose an implicit high-order compact (HOC) finite-difference scheme for solving the two-dimensional (2D) unsteady Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations on irregular geometries on orthogonal grids. Our scheme is second order accurate in time and fourth order accurate in space. It is used to solve three pertinent fluid flow problems, namely, the flow decayed by viscosity, the lid-driv...

A Multigrid Accelerated High-order Compact Fractional-step Method for Unsteady Incompressible Viscous Flows

The objective of this study is the development of an efficient high-order compact scheme for unsteady incompressible viscous flows. The scheme is constructed on a staggered Cartesian grid system in order to avoid spurious oscillations in the pressure field. Navier-Stokes equations are advanced in time with the second order Adams-Bashford method without considering the pressure terms in the pred...

Upwind compact finite difference scheme for time-accurate solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

This article presents a time-accurate numerical method using high-order accurate compact finite difference scheme for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The method relies on the artificial compressibility formulation, which endows the governing equations a hyperbolic–parabolic nature. The convective terms are discretized with a third-order upwind compact scheme based on flux-difference...
